Pakistan qualify for finals of the Under 19 Cricket World Cup

LINCOLN: Pak U-19 Qualify For Cricket WC U-19 Final, Pakistan youth team beat West Indies by four wickets in the first semifinal of the Under-19 World Cup on Monday. Pakistan under-19 team completed the chase with loss of six wickets at Bert Stucliffe Oval in Lincoln. Pakistan won the toss and elected to field in the first semifinal of the youth world cup. KC Brathwaite scored 85 and SD Bowrich 55 for West Indies to set a competitive target of 212 runs. Hammad Azam 92 remains unbeaten and he does it again for Pakistan. He came in under pressure and played sensibly to get Pakistan over the line. Rameez Aziz 39, Mohammed Waqas 29 and Ahsan Ali 28 added useful contributions in Pakistan total to reach the victory target.

The Little Master was born. Hanif Mohammad firmly believed in occupation of the crease. According to the Wisden Almanack, "the scoreboard scarcely moved" during the last of Hanif's 12 Test hundreds, at Lord's in 1967 - but he frustrated the England bowlers to the tune of 187 not out. He played Test cricket alongside his brothers Wazir, Mushtaq and Sadiq (his last Test was Sadiq's first).

ISLAMABAD: A NAB court has issued arrest warrants against Interior Minister Rehman Malik, DawnNews reported.

These warrants are likely in connection with two previous references against Malik.

One of the references was for alleged misuse of authority and the other for the alleged receipt of two cars from Toyota Motors as illegal gratification to expedite the purchase of official vehicles.

A NAB prosecutor told DawnNews that all these cases against Malik and others have been revived following the Supreme Court’s verdict. The move came after the verdict against the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) sent shockwaves through the present set up, with many prominent ministers placed on the Exit Control List. — DawnNews

Pakistan crushed archrivals India 6-3 to enter the final of the Champions Challenge hockey tournament in Salta, Argentina, on Saturday.

They will meet New Zealand , who beat Argentina 3-2 in the other semi-final, played earlier.

In a thrilling encounter, marred by frayed tempers, it was Pakistan who forged ahead when Rehan Butt beat India goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza with a deft touch in the second minute.

Two minutes later, Prabhjot Singh and Muhammad Irfan were sent off after a midfield skirmish.

India forced a penalty-corner in the eighth minute and Dhananjay Mahadik found the mark to restore parity.

The goal spurred the Indian attack and Pakistan goalkeeper Akbar India was under pressure but defended well.

Goalkeper D'Souza too brought off a brilliant save at the other end soon after off Butt, but was left helpless in the 29th minute by the dashing forward who scored with a crisp shot from the top of the circle to regain the lead for Pakistan.

Suddenly the pressure was on India and Pakistan added another goal, this time through their comeback penalty-corner ace Sohail Abbas, three minutes from the breather.

Down 1-3, India, with a mountain to climb in the second period, went on all-out attack and could have pulled a goal back soon after the restart but Rajpal Singh had the mortification of seeing his deflection going just past the far post.

But the Indians' adventurism upfront left yawning gaps in defence, which the Pakistanis did well to exploit and make it 4-1 in the 58th minute when Haseem Khan found the mark with a neat piece of opportunism

The last ten minutes provided high action from end-to-end, resulting in four goals in eight minutes.

ISLAMABAD: A total of 7,793 people in Sindh benefited from the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Minister of State for Law and Justice Afzal Sindhu said.

Thirty-four prominent politicians benefited from the NRO, Sindhu said.

Some of the names include: Altaf Hussain, Asif Ali Zardari, Rehman Malik, Hussain Haqqani, Babar Ghauri, Dr Farooq Sattar, Saleem Shahzad, Nusrat Bhutto, Nawaz Khokar, Anwar Saifullah, Jahangir Badar, Mian Mohammad Rasheed, Tariq Rasheed, Ahmed Mukhtar, Tariq Mahmood, Sardar Maqsood Laghari, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, Ghaniur Rehman, Mir Baz Khan Khaitran, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, A. R. Siddiqui , Javed Ahmed Qureshi and Saeed Mehdi.

The list of beneficiaries presented Saturday showed 72 cases against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain.

Earlier on Saturday, Afzal Sindhu formally presented the list of NRO beneficiaries to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the PM directed the minister to present the list to reporters.

Birth of the Burewala Bombshell. There have been few more scintillating sights in cricket history than Waqar Younis in his pomp. With batsmen hopping and stumps flying, he and Wasim Akram took reverse swing to a new level in the early 1990s with their toe-crushing yorkers. He was at his best in the early 1990s - after bursting onto the scene against New Zealand in 1990-91, Waqar took 109 wickets over a three-year period at an average of 18.07, at the incredible strike rate of 33.55 balls per wicket. He later became captain of Pakistan, and took 7 for 36 - the second-best figures in ODI history - against England at Headingley in 2001. He was also a huge success in county cricket, first for Surrey and then Glamorgan, for whom he took a career-best 8 for 17 against Sussex at Swansea in 1997. He retired in 2004 and is now a television commentator.
