ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly has decided not to send parliamentarians for the golden jubilee celebrations of India’s Election Commission and cable operators have declared they will pull the plug on any telecasts of Indian Premier League matches.
Weeks ago, the participation of the Indian boxing team in a tournament in Karachi was hailed as a positive development for ties between the two countries. It was the first visit by an Indian sporting team after the cancellation of an Indian cricket tour in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks.
But the snub to Pakistani cricketers at the Indian Premier League auction has caused another setback with widening repercussions. Even though the Pakistan government has acted with restraint by not jumping into the controversy, individual ministers have commented strongly against Pakistani players failing to find a place in any of the IPL teams.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said cricket was a way of doing diplomacy and India should send a delegation to apologise to the Pakistani players and invite them to play in the matches. He said it showed India was “not serious” about pursuing peace with Pakistan.
Sports Minister Ejaz Jakhrani also condemned the exclusion of the Pakistani players and said Pakistan would give a “fitting” reply.
Cricketing hero-turned-politician Imran Khan and another Pakistani cricketing great, Zaheer Abbas, said Pakistan should reserve the right to boycott the 2011 World Cup cricket matches at Indian venues in retaliation.
The Cable Operators Association of Pakistan said at a press conference that they would block any local or international channel that telecasts IPL matches, a decision that will hit Geo TV’s sports channel, which has paid for exclusive rights to show the matches in Pakistan.
At a press conference in Lahore, Captain Jabbar Ahmed Khan, the president of the association said the decision had been taken to express solidarity with the players.
The National Assembly has pulled parliamentarians from a delegation which is to travel to India for the Election Commission’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Two parliamentarians were in the delegation.
The rest of the delegates, including Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner, will go ahead with the visit, Farahnaz Ispahani, media adviser to President Asif Ali Zardari said.
Speaker Fehmida Mirza’s announcement that the parliamentarians will not go followed a long speech in the National Assembly by the leader of the Opposition, Chaudhary Nisar Ahmed of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), who said the party was withdrawing its delegate, Ayaz Amir, in protest against the manner in which the Pakistani players had been treated at the IPL auction.
Mr. Ahmed also said his party would not join any other delegation visiting India until “India changes its attitude.” He demanded a ban on all sporting ties with India and also a complete ban on Indian films. He accused the government of trying to appease India.
Jamshed Dasti, head of a parliamentary committee on sports said he would move a resolution in the National Assembly against the IPL.

Pak Flag Hoisted, Tricolour Burnt in Srinagar
SRINAGAR: The green flags of Pakistan were hoisted in various areas of Indian occupied Kashmir on the Independence Day of Pakistan; while the Indian ‘Tri-Colour’ or ‘Tiranga’ was set on fire in many parts of Srinagar on August 15th, which was observed as a ‘black day’ with all business and markets closed in protest to India’s illegal occupation.
According to Kashmir Media Service, people took to streets in various Sri Nagar areas including Habba Kadal, Raj Bagh and Khanqa-e-Mualla and raised slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindabad’, ‘Jeway Jeway Pakistan’ and ‘Hum kia chahtey hein—azaadi’ with Pak flags raised in the air.
Kashmiri youth resorted to fireworks in happiness on the Independence Day of Pakistan.
Meantime, Hurriyat leader Yasmeen Raja was arrested when she attended a ceremony held to celebrate the national day of Pakistan. Raja also hoisted the national flag of Pakistan on her office.
Indian police arrested some other women as well.
Various separatist organisations on Thursday congratulated people of Pakistan on its 62nd independence day and also appealed masses to observe complete shutdown on August 15.
Congratulating people of Pakistan, Hurriyat Conference (M) in a statement said, “We all pray for the peace and stability of Pakistan.”

China should break up India into 20-30 states: Chinese strategist
New Delhi, Aug 10 : In an article likely to raise Indian hackles, a Chinese strategist contends that Beijing should break up India into 20-30 independent states with the help of 'friendly countries' like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
The publication of the article nearly coincided with the 13th round of India-China border talks that ended in New Delhi Saturday on a positive note, with Beijing emphasizing the need to build strategic trust and elevate strategic partnership to a new level to include coordination on global issues.Written in Chinese, the article, "If China takes a little action, the so-called Great Indian Federation can be broken up," is published in the new edition of the website of the China International Institute for Strategic Studies (CIISS), an influential think tank that advises Beijing on global and strategic issues.
According to D.S. Rajan, director of the Chennai Centre for China Studies, Chennai, Zhan Lue, the author of the article, argues that the "so-called" Indian nation cannot be considered as one having existed in history as it relies primarily on Hindu religion for unity.
The article says that India could only be termed a "Hindu religious state" that is based on caste exploitation and which is coming in the way of modernisation.
The writer goes on to argue that with these caste cleavages in mind, China in its own interest and the progress of whole of Asia should join forces with "different nationalities" like Assamese, Tamils and Kashmiris and support them in establishing independent nation states of their own.
In particular, the article asks Beijing to support the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), a militant separatist group in the Indian northeast, to it achieve independence for Assam from India.
Furthermore, the article suggests that China can give political support to Bangladesh to encourage ethnic Bengalis in India get rid of "Indian control" and unite with Bangladesh as one Bengali nation.
If this is not possible, the creation of at least another free Bengali nation state as a friendly neighbour of Bangladesh would be desirable for the purpose of weakening India's expansion and threat aimed at forming a "unified South Asia", the article argues.
The article recommends India's break up into 20-30 nation-states like in Europe and contends that if the consciousness of "nationalities" in India could be aroused, social reforms in South Asia can be achieved, the caste system can be eradicated and the region can march towards prosperity.
The Chinese strategist suggests that to split India, China can seek support of friendly countries including Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan.
China should encourage Bangladesh to give a push to the independence of West Bengal and recover the 90,000 sq km territory in Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls Southern Tibet, says Rajan who has analysed the article for the Chennai-based think tank.
"The write-up could not have been published without the permission of the Chinese authorities, but it is sure that Beijing will wash its hands out of this if the matter is taken up by New Delhi," says Rajan.
"It has generally been seen that China is speaking in two voices - its diplomatic interlocutors have always shown understanding in their dealings with their Indian counterparts, but its media is pouring venom on India," says Rajan.
Which one to believe is a question confronting the public opinion and even policy makers in India, Rajan says, adding that ignoring such an article will "prove to be costly" for India.

Priest murdered in India

A priest was killed on Wednesday in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, where Christians have been targeted in violent attacks, according to the Vatican-based news agency Asianews. The body ofJames Mukalel, 39, was found on Thursday morning on a road leading to his parish in the diocese of Belthangady. According to initial investigations, he was killed while returning to his parish after having conducted a funeral in a neighbouring village.
The bishop of the diocese, Lawrence Mukkuzhy, did not put forward any theories as to the motive for the killing, but ruled out a straightforward criminal act. Another diocesan official Tomy Mattom said it looked like an “execution”. He said the body had no obvious wounds and initial information led him to believe the priest had been strangled. An autopsy must be carried out soon to determine the cause of death.
Indian Christian groups have called for an inquiry into the killing and other attacks on Christians in the region, Asianews said. Twenty churches and chapels have been destroyed in the past year in Karnataka. In the eastern state of Orissa last year, thousands of Christians were forced to flee after Hindu mobs burned their houses, churches, orphanages and schools. NEW DELHI, August 3, 2009 (Compass Direct News) –
The suspicious death of a 39-year-old priest in the southern state of Karnataka has further terrified Christians living in an area known for anti-Christian violence, but police indicate that they doubt it is a homicide. The body of the parish priest of St. Mary’s Church, the Rev. James Mukalel, was found lying near his motorbike in Belthangady sub-district near Mangalore early last Thursday (July 30).
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) maintains that Mukalel, from Belthangady’s Syro-Malabar diocese in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, was killed. Officials at the CBCI said the death of the priest appeared to be suspicious and unnatural, as his body was found nearly naked lying on a remote roadside near the motorbike he had been riding.
Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada district Subramayeshwar Rao told Compass that police had only two theories on the cause of death. “Although I have not seen the autopsy report, I learned from the forensic surgeons that Fr. James Mukalel died of poisoning – most likely naturally because of food poisoning, or he was poisoned.”

Postmortem report to take a week

Police are awaiting the postmortem report to ascertain the cause of death of James Mukalel (38), parish priest of St Mary's Church, Kutrapady in the diocese of Belthangady. Fr James was found dead in what police said are "suspicious circumstances" on Wednesday. Fr James after attending a funeral was returning around 9.30 pm to St Mary's Church.
SP A S Rao said the post-mortem report would take at least a week. "All our field inquiries have been kept pending until such time and they will take shape once we know the cause of death," Rao said. The police have registered a case of suspicious unnatural death under Section 174 C of Cr.PC.
